Dr. Shuler was the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of British Columbia from 2007 to 2017. Currently, he is professor of oral pathology in the Department of Oral Biological and Medical Sciences at UBC Dentistry. He was a faculty member at the University of Southern California for 18 years, serving as the Director of the USC Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology and endowed as the George and Mary Lou Boone Chair of Craniofacial Molecular Biology. At USC he was the Director of the Graduate Program in Craniofacial Biology and Associate Dean for Student and Academic Affairs. He has a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin, a DMD from Harvard, a PhD in Pathology from the University of Chicago, a degree in Oral Pathology from the University of Minnesota and a degree from the Royal Dental College in Copenhagen. Dr. Schuler assesses and manages clinical oral pathology patients with soft and hard tissue lesions. His active research programs are funded by national granting agencies and focused on evaluating the molecular regulation of the secondary palate.
